DofR Presentation #2 (Notes). Thérèse longed for the Eucharist as a child. She lived in a time and a culture where Jansenism was the dominating thought. She was taught to be very careful when receiving Holy Communion and to guard against sacrilegious reception of the Sacrament. At age 11 when she made her First Holy Communion, she wept at the sweetness of it.

DofR Presentation #1 (Notes). St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus experienced separation anxiety and great loss at a young age. She suffered from scrupulosity throughout her life and a profound crisis of faith in her final years. These emotional scars were not obstacles. They became a conduit to holiness because Thérése refused to be controlled by her emotions and chose to cling to God instead.
